Want to know the most important news in tech? Wondering how the latest updates will affect your personal privacy and the security of your business? At Sharp Decisions, we are initiating a regular roundup of the news you need to know.
This week, we are looking into the strength of VPN connections to ensure privacy and security, the capabilities of cyber attackers and CISO’s ability to defend against them, and government access to personal data that can be derived from government subpoenas.
First, Tech Talks shares some thoughts on the importance of VPN. As a reminder, VPN is what encrypts the data you send, and decrypts the data you receive. As noted in Tech Talks, “encrypted data is also routed through servers that make it virtually impossible to track the source and destination of your traffic.” Understanding this type of encryption is becoming more and more important due to regulations such as GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act, as well as the increasing prevalence of data breaches and cyber-attacks.
We help clients put the right systems in place so that their employee data is not compromised.
Additionally, when thinking about how effective Chief Information Security Officers are in defending against cyber attacks and keeping their networks safe, Security Magazine noted some startling findings. As much as 84 percent of CISOs believe “the risks of cyber-attacks will increase and almost a quarter believe the capabilities of attackers are outpacing their ability to defend their organization.” What’s driving this? There are several issues play, including the “lack of sufficient budget and skilled professionals as well as a threat attack surface that is quickly expanding and becoming more sophisticated.”
Lastly, the New York Times reminds us that even our own data is never really that private. While combating terrorism is incredibly important, there is sometimes a need to obtain additional personal information. This kind of data collection used to be associated primarily with tech companies, but new documents show that F.B.I. collection is extending to banks, credit agencies, cellphone carriers and universities as well.
All of this underscores the need for qualified talent who understand the latest technical advancements and can successfully navigate companies through ongoing challenges. At Sharp Decisions, we operate at the intersection of talent and innovation and work with companies all over the world to provide the best talent for their needs.
