White House Announces Veteran Employment Commitment from 50+ Companies through Joining Forces Initiative
Initiative launched by the First Lady and Dr. Jill Biden calls for Corporate America to expand career opportunities for veterans and military spouses.
Sharp Decisions joins Joining Forces coalition with its pledge to hire more military spouses as the newest piece of its award-winning V.E.T.S. Program.
NEW YORK, N.Y. (May 5, 2016) – First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden will host an employment event at the White House Rose Garden on Thursday, May 5 at 10 a.m. to announce pledges from more than 50 companies to hire and train veterans and military spouses. This expands on the commitment Joining Forces began five years ago to work hand-in-hand with the private sector to expand employment and career development opportunities for veterans and military spouses.
In April 2015, the First Lady announced a commitment of an additional 90,000 jobs in high-growth sectors like Energy and Technology.
The commitments announced on Thursday will come from companies ranging from tech startups to some of the largest manufacturers in the world, and represent careers in the fields of aerospace, telecommunications, tech, financial services, and manufacturing.
Since the launch of the Joining Forces initiative in 2011, more than 850,000 veterans and military spouses have been hired.
One of those companies pledging a commitment to the Joining Forces initiative is Manhattan-based technology firm Sharp Decisions, whose V.E.T.S.™ (Vocation, Education, Training for Service Members) Program was created in March 2013 to combat the issue of veteran unemployment by making platoon-based training and deployments central to its mission.
Since the program’s inception, Sharp Decisions has hired and trained almost 120 veterans, investing in their careers by providing them with a distinct growth path.
V.E.T.S. – the first program of its kind – provides boot camp-like, client-tailored corporate technology training to tech-savvy transitioning and industry-experienced veterans, supplementing their existing industry skills with specific, hands-on training to meet client needs. Once training is complete, veterans are deployed as Sharp Decisions employees to clients in squads of three or more, emulating the unit-based culture that they’ve grown accustomed to in the military. The program empowers them to use previously acquired skills as both members and leaders of a team.
The program is proud to serve military members and now their spouses as well, all free of charge to the veteran as Sharp Decisions never touches the veteran’s G.I. Bill benefits.
“Three years ago I started the V.E.T.S. Program because I knew how much sense it made from a business standpoint, for our veterans and for our country,” Sharp Decisions CEO Karen Ross said. “Sharp Decisions is excited to be a part of the Joining Forces coalition moving forward as this partnership will allow us to reach more veterans that need help finding a sustainable career. And by introducing the program to military spouses, we can open even more doors for our military members and their families.”
