One year ago today, as part of the fifth anniversary of the White House’s Joining Forces, Sharp Decisions announced its pledge through the initiative to hire and train 500 veterans and military spouses through our award-winning V.E.T.S.™ (Vocation, Education, and Training for Service members) Program over the next five years. The announcement was made with 50 other companies at the White House.
The initiative expanded on the mission Joining Forces set forth six years ago to work hand-in-hand with the private sector to expand employment and career development opportunities for veterans and military spouses. Since its launch, Joining Forces has helped more than 1.2 million veterans and military spouses find career opportunities.
Joining Forces was started in 2011 by former First Lady Michelle Obama and former Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden after seeing the unemployment rate for our 9/11 generation of veterans was more than 12 percent, and almost one in three of our youngest veterans who wanted to work could not find a job. In August 2011, President Obama challenged the private sector to hire 100,000 veterans and military spouses.
Since our announcement last year, Sharp Decisions has hired 62 veterans and military spouses to train and deploy them to various clients throughout the country. We are thrilled to continue our commitment of hiring veterans and military spouses and pledge to hire many more by the time the two-year anniversary comes around in 2018.
